What Is Wi-Fi 8?
Wi-Fi 8, known technically as IEEE 802.11bn, represents a shift in focus for wireless standards. While previous generations prioritized speed, Wi-Fi 8 emphasizes reliability, stability, lower latency, and seamless roaming. It is backward compatible with older standards, but to enjoy its full benefits, users will need new routers, mesh systems, smartphones, laptops, TVs, and other devices.
Key Benefits of Wi-Fi 8
The standard’s anchor feature is Ultra High Reliability (UHR), a departure from Wi-Fi 7’s Extremely High Throughput (EHT). Key features enabling UHR include:
Multi-Access Point Coordination (MAPC)
Helps access points cooperate rather than interfere, improving performance, extending coverage, and reducing power requirements.
Seamless Roaming Domain (SRD)
Minimizes latency and packet loss during handoffs when a device switches between access points, reducing dropped connections and buffering.
Low Latency Indication (LLI) & Prioritization
Allows devices like gaming consoles to share latency needs and prioritize traffic. Combined with TXOP Preemption and High Priority EDCA, this improves Quality of Service (QoS) so that, for example, a child’s Netflix stream doesn’t disrupt a work video call.
In-Device Coexistence (IDC)
Reduces interference from other radios (Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee) in devices like smartphones, ensuring Wi-Fi performance remains stable.
Extended Long Range (ELR) & Distributed-Tone Resource Unit (DRU)
ELR keeps connections reliable at distance without extra access points. DRU spreads a device’s signal across a wider band, improving signal at the extremities of a home.
How Does Wi-Fi 8 Compare to Wi-Fi 7?
Wi-Fi 8 retains the same theoretical maximum speed of 46 Gbps, operates on the same three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz), and has a maximum 320-MHz channel width as Wi-Fi 7. The improvements are mostly in reliability and interference handling—especially valuable in high-density environments like apartments. If Wi-Fi 7 already works well for you, Wi-Fi 8 may not feel like a substantial upgrade.
When Will Wi-Fi 8 Arrive?
Wi-Fi 7 certification was officially released in January 2024. Wi-Fi 8 certification is expected around 2028, following a typical four‑ to five‑year rollout cycle. However, chip makers are already producing Wi‑Fi 8 chipsets, and TP‑Link has announced Wi‑Fi 8 routers and mesh systems with a first release slated for before the end of 2026. Early adopters will pay a premium. For US users, the FCC is another complication that may limit options. It’s recommended to wait for official certification and for prices to drop.
