Extreme Heat and Humidity Target the Eastern US
The eastern United States is the latest region to face a brutal heat wave as the world experiences a climatic ‘hot potato.’ In the coming days, New York City is forecast to reach near 100°F (38°C), but with high humidity, the heat index will soar to approximately 109°F (43°C). Other major cities including Detroit, Washington, DC, and Boston will see temperatures about 20°F above normal as the holiday weekend approaches.
While these temperatures are not as high as those typically seen in Phoenix, the oppressive humidity makes the heat far more dangerous. The combination creates a stifling environment akin to ‘hanging out inside a dog’s mouth,’ as described by reports. Beyond discomfort, humid heat poses serious health risks.
The Science of Humid Heat and Health Hazards
Humidity significantly impairs the body’s primary cooling mechanism: sweating. Sweat removes heat by evaporating into the air, but in humid conditions, the atmosphere is already saturated with water vapor, reducing evaporation efficiency. ‘When there’s high humidity, especially in a heat wave, it’s much more difficult for the body to physiologically cool off,’ explains Richard Allan, a climate scientist at the University of Reading.
Nighttime Temperatures Compound the Danger
The National Weather Service (NWS) map shows a patchwork of red and pink warnings, with extreme heat alerts issued across the region. While daytime highs are alarming, overnight lows are particularly problematic. ‘Several days in a row of hot temperatures with little relief from overnight low temperatures can increase heat stress on the human body,’ the NWS warned. This danger was underscored by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who urged residents to create a heat plan—primarily ensuring access to air conditioning, checking on neighbors, and monitoring those with conditions susceptible to heat-related illness.
Global Context: Climate Change and El Niño
This extreme heat event follows a week of record-shattering temperatures in Europe, which also experienced a severe heat wave in late May. The burning of fossil fuels has made nearly every heat wave more intense than it would have been in a preindustrial climate. ‘The warming from rising greenhouse gases is clearly adding to global temperature, and that adds extra heat to the heat waves,’ said Allan. ‘It promotes moderate heat to become extreme heat… These humid conditions may be more likely to be promoted into a hot, humid heat wave rather than just humid and warm.’
El Niño’s Role
El Niño, the natural climate phenomenon that forms every few years in the tropical Pacific, is also playing a role. It began earlier this month and is expected to be a particularly potent iteration that will strengthen as summer progresses. El Niño typically boosts temperatures across the northern tier of the US and parts of Canada. With the hottest months still ahead, residents may have multiple opportunities to experience such extreme humid heat.
