Fidji Simo Steps Down from OpenAI’s No. 2 Role
Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s No. 2 executive, is stepping down from her full-time role, as announced in a staff note on Thursday, July 9, 2026. Simo stated that her ongoing medical leave has proven longer and harder than expected, leading her to transition to a part-time advisory role instead.
A Sudden Departure
Simo first revealed her health issues in April 2026, when she announced she was taking medical leave for a relapse of a neuroimmune condition. In that same memo, it was shared publicly that COO Brad Lightcap moved into a new ‘special projects’ role, CMO Kate Rouch stepped down to focus on cancer recovery, and Kevin Weil has since left the company as well.
Leadership Shakeup at OpenAI
Simo joined OpenAI’s board of directors in 2024 and officially joined the company in May 2025 as CEO of Applications, a newly created role reporting directly to Sam Altman that consolidated the company’s business and product operations. This move was part of a broader reporting shift: COO Brad Lightcap, CFO Sarah Friar, and CPO Kevin Weil all began reporting to her, while Altman stepped back to focus on research, compute, and safety.
Background and Career
Simo came to OpenAI from Instacart, where she had been CEO since 2021 and led the company through its 2023 IPO. Before that, she spent over a decade at Meta, including running the Facebook app. Her decision to step back permanently leaves CEO Sam Altman searching for a successor at a critical time as OpenAI eyes a possible IPO and races to close the enterprise gap with Anthropic.
Implications for OpenAI’s Future
Simo was primarily focused on growing OpenAI’s consumer business. However, ChatGPT’s growth cooled late last year, missing internal revenue targets, which pushed the company to lean harder into coding tools instead—an area where it has been and continues, for now, to trail Anthropic. Simo had been widely seen as a likely candidate to take on even more responsibility once OpenAI went public, making her departure a significant gap for Altman to fill.
