Musk Announces New Feature for Community Notes
Elon Musk announced on July 8, 2026, at 11:46 AM PDT that X (formerly Twitter) will update its crowdsourced fact-checking system, Community Notes, to send users direct messages (DMs) whenever a post they have interacted with receives a correction. The feature is not yet live, and Musk did not provide a launch timeframe.
Addressing a Key Criticism
The update aims to tackle a major criticism of Community Notes: that corrections often arrive too late to limit the spread of misinformation. A misleading post can accumulate views and reposts before its accuracy is disputed, and by the time a correction appears, the damage is already done. By proactively notifying users when a post they have engaged with is corrected, X hopes to extend the reach of notes beyond the original post. This could also allow users who unknowingly shared false information to issue their own apologies.
Musk stated: “We will be releasing a new feature that sends you an 𝕏 Chat message if a post you interacted with is corrected.”
Origins of Community Notes
X’s Community Notes system was established before Musk’s acquisition, when the platform was still called Twitter. The idea was to combat misinformation without making the company the sole arbiter of moderation decisions. Instead, contributors could suggest corrections, add critical details, or supply missing information. A note goes live when it reaches consensus among raters who typically disagree on other topics.
Challenges with Scaling
A similar system was adopted by Meta as part of its broader moderation overhaul last year. However, Community Notes has faced scaling difficulties. A study by the Spanish fact-checking site Maldita found that 85% of proposed notes on X remain invisible to users, with only 8.3% being published and visible. Research by the Digital Democracy Institute of the Americas (DDIA), covering 1.76 million notes published between January 2021 and March 2025, put the unpublished share even higher at 90%.
Critics argue that this weakens Community Notes’ ability to surface information when it is most needed. Moreover, users have had no way to learn that a post they saw or boosted received a correction later on. Musk’s proposal to send alerts via X Chat (DMs) would address the latter issue, at least if it goes live. X was asked for comment but did not respond immediately.
